The Story of the Masonic Temple

The group known as Rock Springs Lodge 12, AF&AM, officially started on December 3, 1889. They were given their charter (a special document) by the Grand Lodge of Wyoming. This group of Masons first met in a different building, the W. H. Mellor Building, located at 318 South Front Street in Rock Springs.

Building a New Home

In 1911, the Masons found a good spot to build their very own new temple. They raised money by selling special bonds, collecting $25,000 to help pay for the construction. Work on the new building began soon after. The Rock Springs Masonic Temple was finished by the end of 1912. The first meeting of Rock Springs Lodge 12 in their brand new building happened in January 1913.

A Fire and Repairs

Many years later, in 1947, a fire broke out inside the Temple. The damage from the fire cost about $6,000 to fix. Luckily, the entire cost was covered by insurance, so the Masons didn't have to pay for the repairs themselves. The building was fixed and continued to be used.
