Meister des Wittingauer Altars Agony in the Garden
Christ on the Mount of Olives, from the Třeboň Altarpiece

The Master of the Třeboň Altarpiece was a talented painter from Bohemia (which is now part of the Czech Republic). He worked in Prague around the years 1380 to 1390. We don't know his real name, so he is called "Master of the Třeboň Altarpiece" because of a famous painting he created. This painting is called the Třeboň Altarpiece. It was originally in a church in a town called Třeboň.

This special painting is a triptych, which means it has three panels. It shows three important scenes: Christ on the Mount of Olives, The Tomb of Christ, and the Resurrection. Experts believe he painted it around 1380. Today, you can see this amazing artwork at the National Gallery in Prague.

What was his painting style like?

The Master of the Třeboň Altarpiece had a very unique and beautiful painting style. It seems he was inspired by French art. He helped create something called the "beautiful style." This was a special type of International Gothic art that became popular in Bohemia.

In his paintings, figures look very real and are placed in deep, detailed settings. He used a technique called chiaroscuro. This means he used strong contrasts between light and dark to make things look three-dimensional. This way of painting made his art very intense and lifelike. It was a new and exciting style for Bohemian art and influenced many artists who came after him. Other European artists, like the Master of the Bamberg Altar, were also influenced by his work.

Other famous paintings

The Master of the Třeboň Altarpiece created many other important artworks. One painting, called Our Lady of Sorrows, was made before 1380. It used to hang in a church in Církvice. Another painting, a Madonna from Roudnice, is now also in Prague.

He also painted an Adoration of the Child, which is kept at Hluboká Castle. In Prague, you can find his Crucifixion and a painting called St. Mary of the Altar of Heaven. The St. Mary painting is special because it was one of the first Bohemian artworks to have a decorated frame as part of the art itself. Another painting, Virgin with Saint Bartholomew and Saint Margaret, is also believed to be his work and is located in Hluboká.
