Mateo Gil Rodríguez was born on September 23, 1972, in Las Palmas, Spain. He is a well-known Spanish film director, screenwriter, and producer. He also works as a second unit director, assistant director, cinematographer, and editor.

Mateo Gil is famous for working closely with another Spanish filmmaker, Alejandro Amenábar. He helped write many of Amenábar's movies. He also worked as a second unit or assistant director on some of them. One of the films he co-wrote, The Sea Inside, won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
