About Mathilda Roos
Mathilda Roos was born in Stockholm, Sweden, on August 2, 1852. Her father, Malte Leopold Roos, was an army officer, and her mother was Mathilda Beata Meurk. Mathilda was educated at home and also attended Åhlinska skolan. She never married and lived with her sister Anna for a time. She also sometimes lived with another writer, Laura Fitinghoff. Together, they built a house called Furuliden in Stocksund. Mathilda hoped this house would become a place where women could rest and recover, and it did.
Mathilda Roos's novels often explored issues important to women and looked at problems in society. She was brave enough to write about topics that were not often discussed back then. For example, in her book Hvit ljung (White Heather), she wrote about the challenging lives of schoolteachers. This book is believed to have helped lead to a government decision that improved teachers' salaries a lot! Her ideas about women's rights were also shared in her short writings, where she discussed the thoughts of another important writer, Ellen Key. Mathilda Roos died on July 17, 1908, in Danderyd.
