Matkins, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Matkins is a small, unincorporated community located in the southwestern part of Harrison County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. An "unincorporated community" means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government.

Where is Matkins?

Matkins is found where two Missouri roads, Route P and Route TT, meet. It sits on a slightly raised area, like a gentle hill, between two creeks: White Oak Creek to the west and Little Sampson Creek to the east. This community is about eight miles (or 13 kilometers) southwest of a larger town called Bethany.

A Glimpse into Matkins' Past

Matkins has a short but interesting history. In 1880, a post office was opened there. A post office was a very important place back then, as it was where people sent and received letters and packages, connecting them to the outside world. This post office served the community for many years until it closed in 1907. The community itself was named after one of the very first settlers who came to live in that area.
