Matlan's Early Career
Matlan is from Kota Belud, Sabah. He belongs to the Bajau community. He started his football journey playing in the Presidents Cup. This was a youth competition.
He made his first appearance in the M-League in 1989. He quickly showed his talent by scoring 5 goals in that season. In 1990, he scored 8 goals for Sabah FA. These goals included 6 in the league and 2 in the FA Cup.
Playing for Malaysia
In 1991, Matlan was chosen to play for the Malaysian national team. His first national team game was a friendly match against Aston Villa.
On 12 June 1991, Matlan played his first full international game. This was against the England team. In this match, he scored two amazing goals. He was the only Malaysian player ever to score twice against England. This was a huge moment in Malaysian football history.
In 1995, Matlan made history again. He became the first player from Sabah to be the captain of the national team selection. This team played against a special team from Brazil, Flamengo XI.
