The Mato Kósyk House is a special old house in Albion, Oklahoma. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. This means it is an important building in American history.

About Mato Kósyk

Mato Kósyk (1853–1940) was a famous poet. He is known as one of the most important writers of the Sorbian language. Sorbian is a special Slavic language spoken in a part of eastern Germany called Lusatia.

Kósyk moved from Lusatia to the United States in the 1800s. He eventually settled in a quiet area near Albion, Oklahoma. He chose this spot because it was a beautiful and healthy place, surrounded by the Kiamichi Mountains.

Later, when Kósyk passed away, his writings were not allowed to be published or read in Germany. The government at that time did not want people to be proud of being Sorbian. They also did not want people to speak the Sorbian language.

The Historic House

Mato Kósyk's home is about one-third of a mile west of Albion. It is a simple house, but it has a nice porch that wraps around two sides. The house was built around 1910. It offers a beautiful view of the Kiamichi Mountains.

This house is very important because it is the only building left that is connected to Mato Kósyk. It helps us remember his life and his work.
