Matrouh Governorate is a large area in Egypt, a country in Africa. Think of a governorate like a big state or province. Its capital city is Mersa Matruh, which is located right on the Mediterranean Sea.
About Matrouh Governorate
Matrouh Governorate is known for its beautiful coastline along the Mediterranean Sea. It also stretches far into the desert. This makes it a place with very different kinds of landscapes.
Geography and Nature
The inner part of Matrouh Governorate is mostly a huge desert called the Western Desert. It's a very dry and sandy place! But even in the desert, there are special green spots called oases. One famous oasis here is the Siwa Oasis, known for its date palms and natural springs.
A really interesting part of Matrouh is the Qattara Depression. This is a huge natural dip in the land. It goes down to 133 meters (about 436 feet) below sea level! That makes it one of the lowest points in Africa.
A Look at History
Matrouh Governorate has many historical sites, especially ones connected to World War II. During this big war, important battles were fought in this area, particularly around a place called El Alamein. These battles were very important in deciding the outcome of the war in North Africa. You can find memorials and museums there today that tell the story of these events.
