Matthew Dodsworth worked in several key jobs during his life. Before 1593, he became a Judge in the Admiralty Court for the northern parts of England. This court handled legal cases related to ships and the sea. Later, he also worked as a Registrar and Chancellor for Tobias Matthew, who was the Archbishop of York. These roles meant he helped the Archbishop manage important church and legal matters.

Matthew's son, Roger Dodsworth, became a famous antiquary. An antiquary is someone who studies old things and history, like old documents and buildings.

His Family and Where He Grew Up

Matthew Dodsworth was born around 1544. He was the second son of Simon Dodsworth and Agnes Harrison. His family lived in a place called Settrington in East Riding of Yorkshire, which is now part of North Yorkshire.

Matthew's Education Journey

Matthew went to St John's College, Cambridge in 1565 to study. He then continued his education at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he earned his law degree (called an LL.B) in 1573.

His Family Life

On September 15, 1578, Matthew Dodsworth married Eleanor Sandwith in Oswaldkirk, Yorkshire. Eleanor was the daughter of Ralph Sandwith.

Matthew and Eleanor had a very large family with 15 children! Their children were born and baptised in different places, including Oswaldkirk, St Michael le Belfry in York, and Holy Trinity Church, Goodramgate, York. Their fourth child and first son was Roger Dodsworth, who was born on April 24, 1585, in St Oswald, Oswaldkirk.

Eleanor, Matthew's wife, passed away and was buried in Saxton-in-Elmet, Yorkshire, on April 26, 1613. Matthew Dodsworth himself died before October 8, 1631, in Slingsby, North Yorkshire. His will, which is a legal document about his belongings, was handled in York.
