Matthew Guthrie (born in 1743, died in 1807) was a Scottish doctor, scientist, and traveler. He became an important advisor to the Russian royal family. He studied Russian history and stories, and helped connect Russia and Scotland. He also helped start the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He was good friends with Dr. John Grieve and John Howard.

His Life Story

Matthew Guthrie was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1743. His father was Henry Guthrie. Matthew went to the High School in Edinburgh. Later, he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh.

In 1769, Matthew moved to Russia. He stayed there for most of his life. His first job was as a doctor for young noble cadets in Saint Petersburg. In 1776, he earned his medical degree in Saint Petersburg. He later became a personal advisor to Tsar Alexander I and his wife, Empress Elizabeth.

Matthew was recognized for his work. In 1782, he became a member of the Royal Society of London. In 1783, he was one of the people who helped start the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Matthew Guthrie died in Saint Petersburg, Russia, on August 30, 1807.

His Family

Matthew Guthrie married Marie Dunant in Saint Petersburg in 1781. Marie used to run a school for noble girls in Russia. They had two daughters: Anastasia Jessie Guthrie (born 1782, died 1855) and Mary Elizabeth Guthrie (born 1789, died 1850).

Anastasia married Charles Gascoigne in 1797. After he passed away, she married Thomson Bonar. Their daughter, Anastasia Bonar, later married her cousin, Patrick Fraser Tytler.

Matthew's second daughter, Mary Elizabeth, married General Sir James Hay.
