Matthew Reinhart's Early Life

Matthew Reinhart was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His parents are Gary and Judith Reinhart. Because his father was in the United States Navy, Matthew's family moved a lot. They lived in many states like Florida, Texas, and California.

After finishing high school, Matthew first studied biology. He thought he would go to medical school. He believed a career in art was not possible. He went to Clemson University and took science classes. But he also took art classes to build his creative skills.

Matthew Reinhart's Career in Pop-Up Books

After college, Reinhart moved to New York City. He planned to start medical school a year later. In New York, he met Robert Sabuda, another children's book author. They volunteered together at a community center. Sabuda's book, Christmas Alphabet, was very popular. Sabuda encouraged Matthew to follow his dream of working in art.

The next year, Matthew studied industrial design at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He focused on toy design. He enjoyed his time at Pratt. His dream of designing toys soon changed. He became a "paper engineer" instead. A paper engineer designs how paper moves and folds to create pop-up effects.

Reinhart worked with Robert Sabuda on many projects. They created the New York Times best-selling pop-up series Encyclopedia Prehistorica. This series has three volumes. Their latest pop-up series is Encyclopedia Mythologica. It started with Fairies and Magical Creatures in 2008.

Matthew also worked with Sabuda on books like The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. He helped with A B C Disney and Movable Mother Goose. Reinhart created his first solo pop-up book called The Pop Up Book Of Phobias.

Matthew Reinhart has made many award-winning pop-up books. These include Cinderella, Star Wars: The Pop-Up Guide to the Galaxy, and Mommy?. The book Mommy? was originally by Maurice Sendak and Arthur Yorinks.
