Matthew Smyth was an important person in the history of Oxford University. He was the very first leader, called the Principal, of Brasenose College. He lived a long time ago, in the 1500s.
Who Was Matthew Smyth?
Matthew Smyth, also known as Matthew Smith, was born in a town called Lancaster. He started studying at Oxford University in 1501. He went to Oriel College and earned a degree called a Bachelor of Arts.
From 1506 to 1512, he was a Fellow at Oriel College. This meant he was a senior member who helped teach and run the college. Later, in 1545, he earned another degree, a Bachelor of Divinity.
Leading Brasenose College
On August 24, 1510, Matthew Smyth became the leader of Brasenose Hall. This hall later became Brasenose College. He stayed in charge until he passed away in 1547 or 1548. He was even called the "Principal of the College and Hall of Brasen Nose" in 1514.
Matthew Smyth was the first Principal when Brasenose College was officially founded. This was a special time for the college. He helped make sure the college continued smoothly from its earlier days as a hall.
As Principal, Smyth was in charge of about twelve Fellows and many students. He had important jobs, like making sure students followed the rules. He also received different roles within the Anglican Church during this time.
Some people wondered if Matthew Smyth was related to William Smyth, who helped start Brasenose College. If they were related, it might have helped Matthew get his job. However, it's not clear if they were truly family.
What He Left Behind
Matthew Smyth passed away on February 6, 1547 or 1548. He was buried in Oxford at St. Mary's Church.
In his will, which is like a final set of instructions, Matthew Smyth left some land in Sutton, Lancashire. He wanted this land to help support a teacher at Farnworth School. He also gave land to Brasenose College. The money from this land was meant to help a student from his home area study at the college.
