Maud de Chaworth (born in 1282, died in 1322) was an important English noblewoman. She inherited a lot of wealth. Maud was the only child of Patrick de Chaworth. She married Henry, 3rd Earl of Lancaster, and they had seven children together.

Maud's Early Life

Maud was the daughter of Sir Patrick de Chaworth. He was the Baron of Kidwelly in South Wales. Her mother was Isabella de Beauchamp. Maud's father passed away when she was only one year old. This made her a very wealthy heiress.

Because Maud was so young, she became a ward of the Queen. This meant Eleanor of Castile, who was the wife of King Edward I, became her guardian. Queen Eleanor helped manage Maud's property and future.

After Queen Eleanor died in 1290, King Edward I gave the right to arrange Maud's marriage to his brother. This was Edmund Crouchback, the Earl of Lancaster. In 1292, Edmund decided that Maud would marry one of his sons. He chose Henry.

Marriage and Family

Maud and Henry were married before March 1297. Henry was a little older than Maud. When they married, Maud brought her father's lands and wealth with her. These properties were in places like Hampshire and Carmarthenshire.

Maud is sometimes called "Countess of Leicester" or "Countess of Lancaster." However, she never officially held these titles. She died in 1322, before her husband Henry received them.

Maud and Henry had seven children:

  • Blanche (born around 1302-1305, died 1380), who became Baroness Wake of Liddell.
  • Henry of Grosmont (born around 1310, died 1361). He became the Duke of Lancaster and was a very important person in England.
  • Maud (born around 1310, died 1377), who became the Countess of Ulster.
  • Joan (born around 1312, died 1345). She married John de Mowbray, 3rd Baron Mowbray.
  • Isabel (born around 1317, died after 1347). She became the Prioress of Amesbury Priory.
  • Eleanor (born 1318, died 1372). She married John de Beaumont and later Richard FitzAlan.
  • Mary (born around 1320, died 1362). She married Henry de Percy.
