Joan of Lancaster: Royal Connections
Joan of Lancaster was born around 1312 at Grosmont Castle in Monmouthshire, England. Her family had many ties to the English throne.
Her Parents and Grandparents
Joan's father, Henry, was the son of Edmund Crouchback, 1st Earl of Lancaster. Edmund was a son of Henry III of England, a former King of England. This made Joan a great-granddaughter of King Henry III.
Her paternal grandmother was Blanche of Artois. Blanche had been a queen in Navarre, a kingdom in Europe. Through Blanche, Joan was also related to the royal family of France.
Important Relatives
Joan had one brother, Henry of Grosmont, 1st Duke of Lancaster. He became a very important duke. She also had five sisters:
- Blanche, Baroness Wake of Liddell
- Isabel, who became an Abbess (a leader in a religious community)
- Maud, Countess of Ulster
- Eleanor, Countess of Arundel and Warenne
- Mary, Baroness Percy
Joan's family connections were very important for the future of England. Two of her nieces married sons of King Edward III.
- One niece, Elizabeth de Burgh, Countess of Ulster, married Lionel of Antwerp, Duke of Clarence. This marriage later helped strengthen the claim of the Yorkist family during the Wars of the Roses.
- Another niece, Blanche of Lancaster, married John of Gaunt. Their son became Henry IV, the first king from the Lancastrian royal family.
Marriage and Family Life
Joan of Lancaster married John de Mowbray, 3rd Baron Mowbray on February 28, 1327. They had three children together:
