Mary of Lancaster, Baroness Percy (born around 1320 or 1321 – died 1 September 1362), was an important English noblewoman. She was the youngest surviving child of Henry, 3rd Earl of Lancaster. Her mother was Maud Chaworth. Because of her father, Mary was a great-granddaughter of Henry III of England. This made her part of a very important royal family!
Mary's Family Connections
Mary was born in 1320 or 1321. She had several brothers and sisters. Her brother, Henry of Grosmont, became the 1st Duke of Lancaster. He was a very powerful person! Mary's other sisters were Maud, Joan, and Eleanor.
Through her brother Henry, Mary was an aunt to Blanche of Lancaster. Blanche was the first wife of John of Gaunt. John and Blanche were the parents of Henry IV of England, who later became king. So, Mary was connected to future kings!
Mary's Marriage and Children
Around September 1334, Mary got married at Tutbury Castle. She married Henry Percy. He was the oldest son of Henry de Percy, 2nd Baron Percy. Henry Percy became the 3rd Baron Percy in 1352 after his father passed away.
Mary and Henry had two sons who grew up:
- Henry Percy, 1st Earl of Northumberland (born 10 November 1341 – died 20 February 1408). He married Margaret Neville first, and then Maud, Baroness Lucy.
- Thomas Percy, 1st Earl of Worcester (born 1344 – died 1403).
Mary's Later Life and Death
Mary passed away in Alnwick, Northumberland, England. This happened on 1 September 1362. She was also buried there. After Mary's death, her husband Henry married again. His second wife was Joan Orreby.
