Early Life and Education

Maude Mary Ball was born in Dublin, Ireland, on April 5, 1883. Her father, Valentine Ball, was a geologist and worked as a director at the Science and Art Museum in Dublin. Maude also had a younger sister named Ethel Gresley Ball, who became an artist too.

Maude was taught at home when she was young. Later, she went to study art at two important schools: the Royal Hibernian Academy Schools and the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. She was very good at art and won many awards at both places.

Her Artistic Journey

Maude Mary Ball was a member of several important groups, including the Royal Dublin Society and the Royal Zoological Society of Ireland. She loved to show her artwork to the public.

From 1910 to 1935, Maude displayed 50 of her pieces at the Royal Hibernian Academy's yearly exhibition. She also enjoyed taking trips to France to sketch with her artist friend, Dorothy FitzGerald.

In 1922, Maude, Dorothy FitzGerald, and Maude's sister Ethel had an exhibition together in Dublin. They also had another show in 1930. Maude was good friends with a Belgian painter named Marie Howet, whom she met on Achill Island in 1929.

Maude also showed her art in Paris, France, at a famous exhibition called the Salon des Artistes Francais in 1938 and 1939. She was a close friend of another artist, Mainie Jellett. Maude supported Mainie when her abstract paintings received criticism and helped her set up some of her art shows.
