Inside a Maui Tacos restaurant

Maui Tacos is a restaurant chain that serves "Maui-Mex" food. This means it's a mix of Mexican dishes with a special Hawaiian twist. It's known as a fast casual place, which means it's quicker than a sit-down restaurant but offers higher quality food than typical fast food.

The very first Maui Tacos opened in 1993. It was started by a person named Mark Ellman. He opened it in a place called Nāpili, which is on the island of Maui in Hawaiʻi.

After the first one, Mark Ellman opened six more restaurants across Hawaiʻi. Then, in 1998, he opened his first Maui Tacos on the mainland of the United States.

Growing Across the States

Maui Tacos has grown quite a bit since it started. It now has 21 restaurants in 11 different states. This includes the District of Columbia, which is the capital area of the U.S.

Recently, the company opened its sixth restaurant on the island of Maui itself. This new location is in Kalama Village, in a town called Kihei.

In June 2009, something big happened for the company. The eight Maui Tacos locations in Hawaiʻi were sold. They were bought by a company called Maui Tacos International. This New York-based company was already running the mainland restaurants. They did this through a special business agreement called a franchise agreement.

What's on the Menu?
