About Maurice Utrillo

Maurice Utrillo was the son of the artist Suzanne Valadon. She was a model for many famous painters. Suzanne Valadon later became a respected artist herself.
When Maurice was young, his grandmother raised him. As he grew older, he faced some health challenges. In 1904, when he was 21, his mother encouraged him to try painting.
Maurice quickly showed a natural talent for art. He did not have much formal training. Instead, he learned by himself and from his mother. He painted the streets and buildings he saw around him in Montmartre.
His Art and Fame
After 1910, people started to notice Maurice Utrillo's paintings. By 1920, he was famous around the world. In 1928, the French government gave him a special award called the Cross of the Légion d'honneur.
Even today, you can see his paintings on postcards. One very popular painting is his 1936 work, Montmartre Street Corner, also known as Lapin Agile.
Later Life and Legacy
When Maurice Utrillo was older, he became very religious. In 1935, at age 52, he got married. He moved to a town called Le Vésinet, near Paris.
By this time, he found it hard to paint outdoors. He painted landscapes by looking out windows. He also used postcards and his memories to create his art.
Maurice Utrillo lived to be 71 years old. He passed away on November 5, 1955, in Dax. He was buried in the Cimetière Saint-Vincent in Montmartre, Paris.
Exhibitions and Sales
In 2010, there were several special art shows featuring Maurice Utrillo's work. These shows took place at the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art and in Montmartre, Paris.
These events ended with an auction where 30 of Utrillo's paintings were sold. These paintings came from the collection of Paul Pétridès, who was Utrillo's art dealer. Before this, in 2009, there was also an exhibition in Paris that showed works by both Maurice Utrillo and his mother, Suzanne Valadon.
