Mauryne Eleanor Taylor Brent (born Mauryne Eleanor Taylor; November 14, 1921 – August 3, 2013) was a talented American woman. She was a model, a singer, a poet, and an actress. Mauryne Brent starred in the film Come On, Cowboy!. She also appeared on the cover of Jet magazine on January 26, 1956.

Mauryne had famous relatives. Jazz pianist Billy Taylor was her cousin. Her half-sister, Shirlee Taylor Haizlip, wrote about her in a book called The Sweeter the Juice; A Family Memoir. Mauryne herself loved to write poetry. She even published her own book, The Heart Speaks, in 1976.

Early Life and Family

Mauryne Eleanor Taylor was born on November 14, 1921. Her father, Julian Augustus Taylor, was an important person in his community. He was a preacher and helped organize for the NAACP. The NAACP is a group that works for the rights of African Americans.

Mauryne married Leland Simmons Brent. Sadly, her husband passed away on November 8, 1943. Mauryne and Leland had three children together.

In 1964, Mauryne copyrighted a song where she wrote the words. This means she legally owned the lyrics she created. She wrote at least three songs with music by Officus Delimus Jamison. He was a musician known as O. D. Jamison.

Besides songwriting, Mauryne was also a poet. She wrote many poems throughout her life. In 1976, she shared her personal stories and thoughts in her memoir, The Heart Speaks. A memoir is like a special book where someone tells their own life story.
