Wilde Malve
A wild mallow flower, which inspired the color mauve.

Mauve (say "mohv") is a soft, pale purple colour. It looks a lot like lavender or lilac. The name "mauve" comes from the French word for the "mallow" flower, which has a similar gentle purple shade.

Another name for this colour is mallow, directly from the flower. People first started using "mallow" to describe a colour in English way back in 1611.

In 1856, a young Chemist named William Henry Perkin was only eighteen years old. He was trying to create a medicine called artificial quinine. But instead, he accidentally discovered something amazing! He found a special residue that turned out to be the very first artificial dye made from chemicals, called mauveine. This discovery changed the world of colours forever!

The Story of Mauve

  • Mauve became super popular in the 1890s. People even called this time the Mauve Decade! This was all thanks to William Henry Perkin's new dye. It made it easy and cheap to colour clothes and fabrics with this beautiful shade, so mauve became a big trend in fashion.
