Maxime Goulet

Maxime Goulet (born January 28, 1855 – died January 17, 1932) was an important Canadian politician. He worked in the government of Manitoba from 1878 to 1886. For a time, he was even the Minister of Agriculture, helping to lead the province's farming efforts.

A Look at Maxime Goulet's Life

Maxime Goulet was born in Saint Boniface, Manitoba, in 1855. His father, Alexis Goulet, was from Saint Boniface and was part of the Métis people. The Métis are a special group of people in Canada with both Indigenous and European roots. Maxime's mother, Josephte, was the daughter of John Siveright, a Scottish manager for the Hudson's Bay Company, which was a big trading company.

Starting in Politics

Maxime Goulet began his political journey in 1878. He was chosen by the people to represent the area of St. Vital in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba. This is like being a representative in a provincial parliament. He was part of a group called the French Party.

After that, he ran for election in a different area called La Verendrye. He won these elections in 1879 and again in 1883.

Serving as Minister of Agriculture

From January 1880 to November 1881, Maxime Goulet held a very important job: Minister of Agriculture. In this role, he helped make decisions about farming and food production for the whole province of Manitoba. He stopped being a politician in 1886.

A Trip to Paris

In 1889, Maxime Goulet had an exciting adventure! He traveled to Paris, France, to be part of the famous Buffalo Bill Cody Wild West Show. This show was a big attraction at the Paris World's Fair, a huge event where countries showed off their achievements. Maxime was with other Métis people from the Red River area, including Ambroise Lépine and his brother Maxime Lépine, Michel Dumas, and Jules Marion.

Family and Legacy

Maxime Goulet was the younger brother of Elzéar Goulet. Elzéar was a Métis leader who was involved in a historical event with Louis Riel.

Maxime married Elise Genthon on July 1, 1873. They had a large family with 14 children!

Later in his life, Maxime Goulet worked for the Canadian government in the department that managed land. He passed away on January 17, 1932, at his home in Winnipeg.

Today, a street in central St. Boniface is named Goulet Street, honoring Maxime Goulet and his contributions.
