Who Was Maximilian O'Dempsey?
His Family and Heritage
Maximilian became the Viscount Clanmalier in 1683. He took over this important role from his father, Lewis O'Dempsey, 2nd Viscount Clanmalier. His family had a mix of backgrounds. They were part Gaelic Irish and part Old English. These were two main groups of people living in Ireland at that time.
Supporting King James II
Maximilian O'Dempsey was a Roman Catholic. He strongly supported King James II, who was also Catholic. This was during a big conflict called the Williamite War in Ireland.
King James II made Maximilian the Governor of Queen's County. This meant he was in charge of that area. Maximilian also attended the Irish House of Lords in 1689. This was part of a special meeting called the Patriot Parliament.
His Later Life and Legacy
Maximilian O'Dempsey died in 1691. He had been married two times, first to Anne Bermingham and then to Margaret FitzMaurice. However, he did not have any children.
Because he had no children, his younger brother, Terence O'Dempsey, inherited his family position. Terence had to leave Ireland and went to Cheshire, England. The family's lands were taken away after the war.
Terence O'Dempsey's family line continued. His descendants include James Dempsey of Liverpool, who was a successful merchant. Another famous descendant was General Sir Miles Dempsey. He commanded the British 2nd Army during D-Day in World War II.
