The Story of May

The land where May is located was first given to John Cameron in 1827. The community of May started to grow in the 1870s. It was named after an early settler, W.D. May.

W.D. May's brother, Nathan, opened a store in May in 1879. Two years later, in 1881, a post office was opened. By 1907, May had a blacksmith shop, a general store, a newspaper, and even a bank.

In 1907, a train line called the Brownwood North and South Railway came through May. This helped the community grow. However, the train line was stopped in 1927.

By 1940, about 500 people lived in May. There were several churches and 14 businesses. After that, the population slowly started to get smaller.
