Mayako Kubo was born in Kobe, Japan. She started her music journey by studying piano at Osaka College of Music.

In 1972, she moved to Vienna to learn more about composing music. There, she studied with teachers like Roman Haubenstock-Ramati. She also started making her first pieces of "tape music." This was a new way to create music using recorded sounds.

Later, in the 1980s, she continued her studies with famous composers like Helmut Lachenmann. She also learned about music history in Berlin.

Around 1989, Mayako Kubo became very interested in how plays and shows are put together. This is called dramaturgy. She moved to Italy in 1990, but later returned to live and work in Berlin in 1994.

Mayako Kubo has received many awards and scholarships for her musical work. These awards helped her continue her studies and create new music. Some of her honors include:
