Mayor Buratovich is a small town located in the southwest part of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. It is part of a region called a partido, which is similar to a county, known as Villarino Partido. The town is easy to find because it sits right on National Route 3 (Argentina), an important road.
History of Mayor Buratovich
The town of Mayor Buratovich is named after a very important engineer from Croatia named Santiago Buratovich. He was born in 1846 and passed away in 1909. Santiago Buratovich worked on big projects, including helping to build the famous Suez Canal.
He moved to Buenos Aires in 1869. In Argentina, he used his engineering skills to build things like telegraph lines. He also helped in military efforts to protect the country.
Santiago Buratovich strongly believed that the area where the town now stands needed a railway. Thanks to his hard work and ideas, a train station opened there in 1912. The town then started to grow around this new station. In 1913, the station was officially renamed "Mayor Buratovich" to honor him for his valuable contributions to Argentina.
What the Town is Like
Mayor Buratovich is mainly a farming community. The most important crop grown here is onions, which are often sent to other countries. Many of the farm workers who help grow and harvest these onions come from northern Argentina and Bolivia.
The town is about 58 kilometers (about 36 miles) south of Médanos, which is the capital of Villarino Partido. It is also about 92 kilometers (about 57 miles) south of Bahía Blanca, which is the closest big city.
