What Does This Old House Look Like?

The McCobb–Hill–Minott House stands in the middle of Phippsburg village. It's on the north side of Parker Head Road and looks out over the Kennebec River to the east. The house is a two-story wooden building, shaped almost like a square. It has a special roof called a hip roof and is covered with wooden siding called clapboard.

Right in the middle of the roof, there's a small room with windows on three sides. This is called a cupola. It has its own low roof and a door on one side, which lets you get out onto the main roof. The house has two main front doors, one facing southeast and another facing northwest. Each door has decorative columns called Doric pilasters and a triangular shape above it, known as a gabled pediment. A long addition, called an ell, stretches out from the house towards the northwest. This ell connects the house to a barn, and both of these parts were added in the late 1700s.

Who Lived Here? A Look at Its Past

The McCobb–Hill–Minott House was built in 1774 by a builder named Isaac Packard. He built it for James McCobb, who was a very important person in the area.

James McCobb: A Leader in Early America

James McCobb owned a lot of land and was a local political leader during the time of the American Revolution. He played a big role in his community during those important years.

Mark Langdon Hill: Maine's First Congressman

One of James McCobb's daughters married a man named Mark Langdon Hill. Mark Langdon Hill worked with his brother-in-law, Thomas McCobb, to start a local shipyard and a business that traded goods. Mark Langdon Hill was also very active in politics. After Maine became a state in 1820, he became one of its first representatives in the United States Congress. A Congressman is a person who represents their state in the U.S. government, helping to make laws for the country.

Charles V. Minott: A Successful Shipbuilder

After Mark Langdon Hill passed away, the house was bought by Charles V. Minott. He was one of the most successful shipbuilders in the region during the second half of the 1800s. This house has been home to many important people who helped shape the history of Phippsburg and Maine.
