History of the House
The McCulloch House is a special building, listed on the Canadian Register of Historic Places. This means it is recognized as an important part of Canada's history.
Building and Changes
Thomas McCulloch built his home around 1806. It started as a one-and-a-half-story cottage made of brick, with beautiful sandstone details. It was built on a small hill, giving it a great view of Pictou Harbour.
Around 1890, long after McCulloch lived there, the house was updated. A new roof style, called a gambrel roof, was added. This type of roof has two different slopes on each side. Windows that stick out from the roof, called dormers, were also added. These changes gave the house the look it has today.
Repairs and Reopening
In the late 1990s, the museum had to close because the old building needed major structural repairs to make it safe. After a lot of work, it reopened in 2006 with brand-new exhibits to better tell the story of Thomas McCulloch and his time.
Who Was Thomas McCulloch?
Thomas McCulloch was a key person in Pictou's development. He was known for his work in two main areas:
- Education: He was a passionate teacher who believed everyone deserved an education. He even started Pictou Academy, a famous school. The museum has many artifacts from his teaching career.
- Politics: McCulloch was also involved in the community's public life. He helped shape the political discussions of his time, working to improve life in Nova Scotia.
The museum helps visitors understand his impact on the province and why he is still remembered today.
