The McFlurry is a super popular frozen dessert sold by McDonald's, a well-known fast food chain. It's like a delicious mix of creamy vanilla soft serve ice cream with yummy candies, cookies, or sweet sauces blended right in! It comes in a cup, ready to enjoy. A Canadian named Ron McLellan first created the McFlurry in 1995 in Bathurst, New Brunswick. It became available in the United States a couple of years later in 1997.

Ron McLellan, who owned a McDonald's restaurant in Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada, invented the McFlurry in 1995. The very first McFlurry, which tasted like Oreo cookies, was sold on June 7, 1995.

After it became a big hit in Bathurst, McDonald's started selling the McFlurry in many places in Toronto. In the United States, the McFlurry was first tested in some areas in 1997. By March 1998, you could find it in all McDonald's restaurants across America and Canada. Since then, it has slowly been introduced in many other countries around the world.

McFlurry Cup Redesign

For a while, the McFlurry cups had a wide opening at the top. This caused a problem because some small animals, especially European hedgehogs in the UK, could get their heads stuck inside the discarded cups. People were worried about the animals getting hurt.

Because of these concerns, McDonald's changed the cup design in 2006. They made the opening smaller so that animals could not get trapped. In June 2019, McDonald's in the United Kingdom announced they would stop using lids on McFlurrys completely. This was part of their plan to use less single-use plastic. However, some other countries still use the cups with circular openings.

How a McFlurry is Made

A McFlurry starts with McDonald's vanilla-flavored soft serve ice cream in a cup. Then, different types of candy or cookies are added. The McFlurry has a special spoon with a hole in its handle. This spoon is attached to a blender that mixes all the yummy ingredients into the ice cream.

The flavors of McFlurry can be different depending on where you are in the world. New and exciting flavors are often introduced! The ice cream used in a McFlurry is the same creamy ice cream McDonald's uses for its regular cones and sundaes. This ice cream is made from milk that has been treated at a very high temperature to keep it fresh. In 2016, McDonald's started removing artificial flavors from its vanilla ice cream. This change was part of an effort to make their food more appealing to customers.

What People Think

Many people really enjoy McFlurrys! Reviewers from Thrillist magazine called the M&M McFlurry "the epitome of low stakes, drive-thru fun." They said it was a great, simple dessert to enjoy.
