How the McFlurry Began
The McFlurry was created by Ron McLellan in Bathurst, Canada. The very first McFlurry, which was an Oreo flavor, was sold on June 7, 1995. People in Bathurst loved it!
Because it was so popular, McDonald's started selling the McFlurry in other places. It came to some restaurants in Toronto next. In the U.S., McDonald's tested the McFlurry in certain areas in 1997. By March 1998, you could find the McFlurry in all McDonald's in America and Canada. Since then, it has been introduced in many other countries too.
McFlurry Cup Changes
For a while, the McFlurry cups had a wide opening on the lid. This caused a problem for some small animals, like European hedgehogs, in the UK. They could get their heads stuck in discarded cups.
After people raised concerns, McDonald's changed the cup design in 2006. They made the opening smaller to keep animals safe. In June 2019, McDonald's in the United Kingdom announced they would stop using lids on McFlurrys completely. This was part of their plan to use less single-use plastic. However, some other countries still use lids with circular openings.
How a McFlurry is Made
A McFlurry starts with McDonald's vanilla soft-serve ice cream in a cup. This is the same ice cream used for their cones and sundaes.
The McFlurry has a special spoon. This spoon has a hole in its handle. The spoon attaches to a machine that blends the ingredients. Different candies or cookies are added to the cup. Then, the machine mixes them into the ice cream using the special spoon.
The types of candy and cookies available for McFlurrys can be different depending on the country. New flavors are often introduced, so there's always something new to try!
