McKinley Mitchell (born December 25, 1934 – died January 18, 1986) was an American singer. He was known for his blues and rhythm and blues music. He started his singing career with gospel music. His first song was "Rock Everybody Rock" in 1959.

In 1962, his song "The Town I Live In" became a big hit. It was released on the One-derful label in Chicago. This song reached number 8 on the US Billboard R&B chart. Later in his life, he went back to Mississippi. He recorded his album I Won't Be Back for More in 1984.

His Unique Music Style

A famous music critic named Robert Christgau reviewed McKinley Mitchell's 1978 album. He said it was like a "small miracle." Christgau felt that Mitchell's music mixed soul and blues in a special way. He noted that the songs had a great "groove." This meant the music had a perfect rhythm and feel.

Early Life and Passing

McKinley Mitchell was born in Jackson, Mississippi. He passed away in Chicago Heights, Illinois. He died from a heart attack in January 1986. He was 51 years old.
