McLeod is a small, unincorporated community in Sweet Grass County, Montana, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. McLeod is located southwest of a larger town called Big Timber, along Montana Secondary Highway 298.
History
McLeod is located in the beautiful Boulder Valley, an area rich in natural resources. The community first started as a mining settlement. This means people came here to dig for valuable minerals. It was named after W.F. McLeod.
The first Post Office in McLeod opened in 1886. A Post Office is a place where you can send and receive mail. E.E. Fowler was the first Postmaster, which is the person in charge of the Post Office.
In 1916, people tried to find oil by drilling a well in the area. Instead of oil, they found water that was naturally heated deep underground. This warm water was then used to open a swimming pool, which was a big deal at the time! A Post Office was set up again in McLeod in 1920, and it is still open today.
Today, McLeod is privately owned.
