McTavish Street is a well-known street in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is located in an important area called the Golden Square Mile. This street runs up the side of Mount Royal, a large hill in the city. It stretches from Sherbrooke Street all the way to Pine Avenue. At its top end, you can see Ravenscrag, which was once the home of Sir Hugh Allan.

Discovering McTavish Street

This street is named after Simon McTavish. He was a very important person who once owned a lot of land around this area. His large property, or "estate," covered much of the land where the street now stands.

A Special Street for Walking

McTavish Street is right next to the main campus of McGill University. Since May 28, 2010, the lower part of the street has become a special "car-free zone." This means cars are not allowed there. It's a place mainly for people to walk and enjoy.

Making the Street Greener

There are plans to make McTavish Street even nicer. These plans include adding more shrubs and trees. This will make the street much greener and more pleasant. Making McTavish Street a walking-only area is part of a bigger plan for the city. It is also part of McGill University's own project. This project is called "Greening the Lower Campus." It aims to add more green spaces to the university area.

The McTavish Reservoir

Above Doctor Penfield Avenue, McTavish Street runs along the western edge of the McTavish reservoir. A reservoir is a large place where water is stored. This reservoir is an important part of the city's water system.
