McWilliams is a small place in Wilcox County, Alabama, United States. It is an unincorporated community, which means it does not have its own local government like a city or town.
History of McWilliams
McWilliams got its name from a general store. This store was started by the McWilliams family. They moved to South Alabama from a place called Orangeburg District in South Carolina. Many people from this family still live in Alabama today. Another part of the family moved to Mississippi.
The McWilliams family had many members who became Baptist preachers. There are also old houses belonging to the McWilliams family that you can still see in the area. Some famous people from this family include:
- Richebourg Gaillard McWilliams, who was a great scholar at Birmingham Southern College.
- Thomas E. "Shorty" McWilliams, a talented football player for the Army and Mississippi State University.
Some people think the community might have been named after Evander T. McWilliams. He was the first postmaster, which is the person in charge of a post office. However, the McWilliams family moved to the area before the year 1900. The post office in McWilliams first opened in 1900.
McWilliams used to be an official town in the early 1900s. This means it had its own local government. The 1910 U.S. Census shows it became a town in 1901. But sometime after 1930, it stopped being an official town.
