Meadow Lakes is a small, quiet community in Fresno County, California. It's not a city with its own government, but rather an "unincorporated community." This means it's part of the larger county area. Meadow Lakes is located about 6.5 miles (10.5 km) west-southwest of Shaver Lake Heights. It sits high up in the mountains, at an elevation of 4,452 feet (1,357 meters) above sea level.
History of Meadow Lakes
The idea for Meadow Lakes first came about in the 1920s. A judge named Ernest Walling, along with his friends Jean Vincenz and Lloyd Jackson, imagined creating a new community here.
In 1927, this group bought a very large piece of land, about 1,280 acres. A small part of this land was planned to become the Meadow Lakes community. They bought this property from Alva Snow and his wife, Dora P. Snow.
Later, during a tough economic time known as the Great Depression, the Snow family became owners of some parts of Meadow Lakes again. This included several land lots that hadn't been sold yet, the community's water system, and other nearby properties.
Meadow Lakes even had its own post office for a short time. It operated from 1930 to 1933, though it closed for a period in 1932.
