A Place for Meat Research

In the late 1950s, people in the UK realized they needed a special place to study meat. In March 1962, a group of meat producers and government officials met. They decided to build a meat research institute. It would cost about £500,000 to build. It would also cost around £100,000 each year to run.

Building the Institute

The first director, who was in charge of the institute, was chosen in February 1963. This was even before construction started! He came from another research center in Cambridge. They decided to build the new meat institute right next to a school for animal doctors, called a veterinary school. Permission to build was given in May 1963.

To help pay for the institute, the government created a special tax. This tax was placed on farm animals. Later, a group called the Meat and Livestock Commission managed this money. Staff began moving into the new building in November 1967.

Royal Opening and Closure

The Queen herself officially opened the new institute. This happened on April 19, 1968. She also opened new buildings at the veterinary school next door. Buglers played a song called The Roast Beef of Old England during the ceremony.

In 1985, the Meat Research Institute joined with another research group in Norfolk. This new, bigger group was called the IFR. Today, part of it is known as the Quadram Institute Bioscience. However, in 1990, the government decided to stop giving money to the Meat Research Institute. Because of this, the institute closed its doors in December 1990.

Where It Was Located

The Meat Research Institute was located in Lower Langford in North Somerset. It was right next to the Langford House School of Veterinary Science. You could find it on the B3133 road, north of the A38.
