Mechanicsville is a small, historic community located in Readington Township in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own separate local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of a larger township, which handles services like roads and schools.

Where is Mechanicsville?

Mechanicsville is found along a main road called US Route 22. It is just east of another community named Whitehouse. You can find it near where Lamington Road crosses Route 22.

Mechanicsville's Past

Long ago, Mechanicsville was a busy little place. It had a tavern, which was like a restaurant and inn. There was also a general store where people could buy supplies. The community was named "Mechanicsville" because it had many mechanic shops. These shops would fix wagons and other things for travelers. There were also many homes for people living there.

Over time, both Whitehouse and Mechanicsville changed. Many businesses along the main road either closed or moved. Because of this, the two communities eventually grew together. Today, some places that were once in Mechanicsville are now considered part of Whitehouse. For example, the Whitehouse General Store, the East Whitehouse Fire Department, and the Whitehouse United Methodist Church are in this area. The famous The Ryland Inn was also located in this part of Whitehouse.

Historic Places

The Whitehouse–Mechanicsville Historic District is a special area that includes historic buildings and sites from both Whitehouse and Mechanicsville. This district was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 17, 2015. Being on this list means these places are important to history and should be protected.
