The Medad Stone Tavern is a very old house in Guilford, Connecticut. It was built way back in 1803. Even though it's called a "tavern," it was never actually used as one!
This special building is a great example of how houses looked in the early 1800s. Today, it's a historic house museum. This means you can visit it to learn about history. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009 because it's so important.

What is the Medad Stone Tavern?
The Medad Stone Tavern is located in a quiet, country-like area of Guilford. It sits on the west side of Three Mile Course, near a small stream.
The House's Look
The house is a two-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It has a unique roof shape called a gambrel roof. The outside walls are covered with clapboard siding. The house sits on a hill, so you can see the whole front of the basement level.
- The roof has five small, gabled windows called dormers.
- There are brick chimneys near both ends of the house.
- A porch with a slanted roof covers the front. It looks like it's two stories tall because of the basement.
- The main front of the house has five sections with windows.
- The front door is in the middle and has wide windows on each side.
The Property
The house is on about 10 acres (about 4 hectares) of land. There is also an old barn, a corn crib (a building for storing corn), and a garage on the property.
A Glimpse into History
Medad Stone built this house in 1803. He planned for it to be a tavern, which was like an inn or a hotel for travelers. He thought a new road, the Boston Post Road, would pass right by his house.
Why It Never Became a Tavern
However, the road was never changed to go past his property. Because of this, Medad Stone never opened his tavern. Instead, the building was always used as a private home.
The Davis Family's Home
The Davis family lived in the house for almost 200 years! They used the land around it for farming.
A Museum Today
In 2001, the Davis family gave the house to the Guilford Keeping Society. This is a local group that works to preserve history. They carefully fixed up the house. Now, it's open as a museum for everyone to enjoy and learn from.
