The Medad Stone Tavern is a historic house museum located at 191 Three Mile Course in Guilford, Connecticut. It was built in 1803. Even though it's called a "tavern," it was never actually used as one! This house is a great example of the Federal style of architecture from the early 1800s. Today, a local history group takes care of it as a museum. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

What is the Medad Stone Tavern?

The Medad Stone Tavern sits in a quiet, country-like area west of Guilford Center. It is on the west side of Three Mile Course. A small stream, which flows into the West River, is just south of the house.

How the House Looks

The house is a two-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It has a special roof called a gambrel roof. The outside walls are covered with clapboards. The house is built on a sloped piece of land. This means you can see the whole front of the basement level.

The roof has five small windows that stick out, called gabled dormers. There are brick chimneys near both ends of the house. A porch with a slanted roof covers the front of the house. This porch looks like it's two stories tall because of how the basement shows. The main front of the house has five sections. It has windows that slide up and down, and a main door in the middle. The front door has wide windows on each side. The house sits on about 10 acres of land. There is also a barn, a corn crib, and a garage on the property.

The Story of the Tavern

Medad Stone built this house in 1803. He planned for it to be a tavern. A tavern was a place where travelers could stop for food, drinks, and a place to sleep. He built it along a new road that was supposed to be part of the Boston Post Road.

However, the road was never changed to go past his house. Because of this, Medad Stone never opened his tavern. The building was only ever used as a private home. The Davis family lived in the house for almost 200 years. They farmed the land around it.

In 2001, the Davis family gave the house to the Guilford Keeping Society. This group works to preserve local history. They have carefully fixed up the house. Now, it is open to the public as a museum. Visitors can learn about life in the early 1800s.
