History of Medary
Medary has an interesting past, especially with railroads. Long ago, a railroad company called the La Crosse, Trempealeau & Prescott Railroad wanted to build a train line.
Early Railroad Connections
This railroad planned to connect a spot near Winona, Minnesota, to another big railroad called the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul. This connection point was a very important place where train tracks met.
From Trempealeau to Winona Junction
At first, this important train meeting spot was called Trempealeau Junction. But later, its name changed to Winona Junction. This name stuck for a while, showing its connection to Winona.
Railroad Changes and New Names
On June 6, 1877, the La Crosse, Trempealeau & Prescott Railroad joined forces with a larger company, the Chicago and North Western Railway. This was a big change for the area's train services.
The community was later renamed Medary. This new name was chosen to honor Samuel Medary. He was an American politician, which means he was a person involved in government and making decisions for the public.
Medary's Post Office
For a short time, from 1895 to 1900, Medary even had its own community post office. This was a place where people could send and receive mail, which was very important before emails and phones!
