Medicine Mound is a special place in Texas. It's known as a ghost town. This means it was once a busy community, but now very few people live there. It's located in Hardeman County, in the state of Texas, United States.

Medicine Mound: A Texas Ghost Town
Location and Name
Medicine Mound is found along a road called Farm to Market Road 1167. The town gets its name from the Medicine Mounds. These are four hills located just south of the town.
Long ago, the Comanche people lived in this area. They believed these mounds were very special. They thought powerful spirits lived there. This belief gave the mounds, and later the town, their unique name.
A Town on the Move
Medicine Mound wasn't always in the exact same spot. In 1908, a new train line was built. This was the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway. Because of the new railway, the town decided to move. It shifted about 2.5 miles north to be closer to the train.
At its busiest time, Medicine Mound was a lively place. About 500 people lived there. The town also had 22 different businesses. These included stores, shops, and other places where people worked.
Challenges and Changes
Life in Medicine Mound faced a big challenge in 1932. A large fire swept through the town. Most of the buildings were destroyed by this fire. It was a difficult time for the community.
By 1940, the town was smaller. There were six stores still open. The population had dropped to 210 people. Over the next decade, more changes happened. In the 1950s, the local school closed. The post office also shut down. These services were then combined with the nearby town of Quanah.
Over time, Medicine Mound became a ghost town. It's a reminder of how communities can grow and change.
