A Look Back: History of the Cave
People have known about a cave called Mediterranean Cave for a long time. Records show a cave with this name was used between 1779 and 1783. This was during the Great Siege of Gibraltar, a time when the area was under attack. We don't know for sure if that old cave is the exact same one we call Mediterranean Cave today.
The cave we know as Mediterranean Cave was discovered around the year 1900. Later, in 1942, it was used by the Admiralty. The Admiralty is a part of the British government that looks after the navy. They used the cave as a "distillery," which means it was a place where they made fresh water from seawater. This was very important for ships and people living there during wartime.
