Scientific classification

The Mekong wagtail (Motacilla samveasnae) is a cool bird that lives near rivers. It belongs to the Motacillidae family, which includes other wagtails. Scientists first officially described this bird in 2001. They named it after Sam Veasna, a Cambodian bird expert who had passed away.

This wagtail is mostly black and white. It looks a bit like the African pied wagtail. However, these two birds live in very different parts of the world. The Mekong wagtail has special features on its face and a unique voice. These help tell it apart from other black and white wagtails in Southeast Asia.

About the Mekong Wagtail

The Mekong wagtail looks a lot like the African pied wagtail. But these two species live far apart. The Mekong wagtail has small differences in its wing patterns. Its calls and songs are also very special.

This bird is easy to spot. It is the only black and white wagtail in Southeast Asia with certain markings. It has a black forehead, black areas around its eyes, and black ear covers. It also has clear white stripes above its eyes. Its throat and neck patch are white too.

Where It Lives and What It Likes

The Mekong wagtail lives in the Mekong River valley. It breeds in countries like Cambodia and Laos. Sometimes, you can also see it visiting Thailand and Vietnam.

These birds like wide, lowland river channels. They prefer fast-flowing parts of the river. These areas often have rocks, sandbars, and gravel. There are also special bushes that can handle being underwater for a long time. These bushes are called Homonoia riparia.

During the rainy season, from May/June to October/November, the river levels rise. The usual spots where the birds live get flooded. When this happens, the wagtails move to earthen banks. They also gather near plants hanging over the water. You can find them on patches of exposed sand and mud. They often live in pairs, and some pairs protect their area strongly. You might also see small groups of fewer than twelve birds.

Threats to the Mekong Wagtail

The Mekong wagtail is quite used to people being around. Its home is not easily changed by everyday human activities. However, big changes to the river can be a problem.

Plans to build dams along the Mekong River are a major concern. Especially in parts of the river that are not very steep. These dams could flood large areas where the wagtails live. This would destroy their natural river habitat.

How It Was Discovered

This bird species was not officially known until 2001. That's when scientists finally described it. As mentioned, it was named to honor Sam Veasna. He was a Cambodian expert who studied birds.

Even though it looks like the African pied wagtail, genetic tests show something interesting. The Mekong wagtail is not more closely related to the African pied wagtail than to other black and white wagtails. For example, it's not closer than to the white wagtail (M. alba) or the white-browed wagtail (M. maderaspatensis).
