Melafix facts for kids
Melafix is a special liquid medicine for pet fish. It's made by a company called Mars Fishcare. People use it as a natural way to help fish with certain sicknesses, especially those caused by tiny germs called bacteria. Melafix is made from oil from the cajeput tree.

How Melafix Helps Fish
Melafix is often used by people who keep fish as a hobby. They use it to treat or stop common fish illnesses like fin rot and "cottonmouth disease." Fin rot makes a fish's fins look ragged, and cottonmouth disease can make white, fuzzy patches appear around a fish's mouth. Some fishkeepers like Melafix because it's a natural option.
However, not everyone agrees on how well Melafix works. Some fish experts wonder if it's truly effective. They also worry it might not be safe for all types of fish, especially "labyrinth fish" like the beautiful Betta splendens (also known as Siamese fighting fish). These fish have a special organ that helps them breathe air from the surface, and some people think Melafix might harm it.
Scientists also use Melafix in their labs. For example, when they study zebrafish (which are important for understanding human health), they sometimes use Melafix. They use it after tagging the fish to help prevent infections and keep the fish healthy. Melafix is also on a list of approved treatments for fish that are brought into Australia, helping them stay healthy during their quarantine period.
How Melafix Works and Its Safety
Scientists have studied Melafix to see how well it works and if it's safe.
Studies on Bacteria and Fish Health
A study from 2015 looked at Melafix and found it didn't directly kill several common fish bacteria. This means it might not work like a traditional antibiotic. Instead, the study suggested that if hobbyists saw good results, it might be because Melafix helps boost the fish's own immune system. This means it could help fish fight off sicknesses themselves. The study also found that Melafix did not harm goldfish or common clownfish.
Studies on Parasites
Another study in 2015 tested Melafix against a common parasite found on guppy fish, called Gyrodactylus turnbulli.
- Lab Tests: In tests done in a lab dish (called in vitro), Melafix, the cajeput oil it's made from, and another ingredient called an emulsifier all worked well against the parasite. They were as effective as a strong medicine called Levamisole.
- Fish Tank Tests: When tested on actual fish in tanks (called in vivo), Melafix worked very well against the parasite when used with another product from the same company, called Pimafix. However, when Melafix was used by itself, it didn't show a big difference compared to not using any treatment. This suggests it might work best when combined with other treatments.
