Melbourne, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Melbourne is a small, quiet place in Harrison County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It's known as an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's managed by the county.

Where is Melbourne?

Melbourne is located in the southeastern part of Harrison County. You can find it right on Missouri Route 146, a local road. If you travel about 4 miles (6.4 km) west, you'll reach Gilman City. Going east for about 2.5 miles (4 km) will take you to Brimson, which is in the next county over, Grundy County.

Nature is all around Melbourne! Sugar Creek flows just north of the community, and Tombstone Creek passes by on the south side. These creeks are important parts of the local environment.

A Look at Melbourne's Past

Melbourne has a bit of history, even though it's a small place. A post office was opened here in 1897, which was a big deal for the community at the time. It helped people send and receive mail, connecting them to the outside world. This post office served the area for many years, finally closing its doors in 1966.

The community got its name from a much larger and more famous city: Melbourne, in Australia. It's interesting how places across the world can share names!
