Melbourne Square is a big indoor shopping mall in Melbourne, Florida. It first opened in 1982. Today, some of its main stores, called "anchor stores," are two Dillard's stores, J. C. Penney, Macy's, and Dick's Sporting Goods.

Mall History and Big Stores

How Melbourne Square Started

Melbourne Square was built on land that used to be an orange grove. When it opened in 1982, it was the second shopping mall in Melbourne. The first mall, Brevard Mall, opened much earlier in 1962.

Original Anchor Stores

The first main store to open at Melbourne Square in 1982 was Ivey's. Other big stores that opened later included Jordan Marsh, Burdine's, JCPenney, and Belk. These large stores are often called "anchor stores" because they attract many shoppers to the mall.

Changes Over the Years

In 1990, the Ivey's store changed its name and became the mall's first Dillard's. A few years later, in 1992, Jordan Marsh closed. A new store called Mervyn's opened in its place. However, Mervyn's also closed in 1997. That space then became a second Dillard's store.

Recent Store Updates

In 2003, Macy's took over the Burdine's store. It was called Burdines-Macy's for a while, then just Macy's by 2005. The Belk store moved to a different location in Viera in 2004. The old Belk building was taken down in 2006.

New Stores in the 2000s

After the Belk building was removed, new stores were built. These included Dick's Sporting Goods and Circuit City. Circuit City later closed in 2009. The space where Circuit City used to be became a World Of Decor store. Later, in 2014, it changed again to LA Fitness. The popular clothing store H&M also joined the mall that same year.

Community Events

Each year, a special Hanukkah menorah parade happens near the mall. This event is organized with the local branch of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement.
