Melchior Mbonimpa, born in 1955, is a writer from Burundi who also holds Canadian citizenship. He is famous for his novel Les morts ne sont pas morts. This book won a special award called the Prix Christine-Dumitriu-Van-Saanen in 2006. This award is given out at the Salon du livre de Toronto, a big book fair in Toronto.

Before winning that award, he was also recognized for other books. His novel Le totem des Baranda was a finalist for the same award in 2002. Another book, Le dernier roi faiseur de pluie, was a finalist in 2004.

Melchior Mbonimpa is also a professor. He teaches philosophy at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario. He writes both novels and non-fiction books. His non-fiction work often focuses on African politics. In 2019, Ici Radio-Canada recognized him as one of the 25 most important Black Canadian people in Franco-Ontarian culture. Franco-Ontarian means French-speaking people living in Ontario.

His book Le totem des Baranda was chosen for a special event in 2021 called Le Combat des livres. This event is like a friendly competition where different people defend their favorite books. Filmmaker Tanya Lapointe defended his book.
