Dr. Melissa Freeman, born in April 1926, is a respected doctor from the Bronx. She has dedicated her life to helping people and has worked at the Beth Israel Medical Center for many years.
Early Life and School
Melissa Freeman grew up in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Her grandfather was born into slavery in the 1850s. He was a teenager when the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, which helped end slavery.
Melissa went to the High School of Music & Art. There, she really enjoyed learning about the human body (physiology) and how to help people in their communities (social work). She worked hard, even taking night classes and several day jobs. In 1955, she graduated from Howard University College of Medicine. She was one of only four women in her class of 150 students!
A Doctor's Career
After medical school, Dr. Freeman completed her training at Kings County Hospital Center and Nassau University Medical Center. She started practicing medicine in 1961.
Dr. Freeman was one of the first doctors to offer special care to women needing help with certain health conditions. In 1981, she opened her own internal medicine practice in Harlem. Internal medicine doctors focus on preventing, diagnosing, and treating adult diseases.
She has worked at Beth Israel Hospital for over 50 years. She also helps run a special health program in New York. Dr. Freeman enjoys guiding and teaching young doctors who are just starting their careers.
