Melleruds Idrottsförening started on July 28, 1908. The club was founded at a meeting in Jacobssons café in Mellerud. Eric Widlund was the first chairman of the club.
Since it began, Melleruds IF has played in the middle levels of the Swedish football league system. The club plays its home games at a field called Rådavallen in Mellerud.
Melleruds IF is connected to the Dalslands Fotbollförbund. This is a local football association.
