Melrose–Rugby is a neighborhood in Roanoke, Virginia. It started as an early suburb around the 1890s. This area is in central Roanoke. It shares borders with several other neighborhoods. These include Roundhill, Washington Park, Loudon-Melrose, Harrison, Fairland, and Villa Heights. Big roads like Interstate 581 and U.S. Route 460 (Melrose Avenue) form some of its edges.

History of Melrose–Rugby

Melrose–Rugby grew a lot between 1889 and 1920. Different land companies bought and developed the land here. A big reason for its growth was the streetcar. The streetcar system expanded into Melrose by 1890. This made it easier for people to travel and live in the area.

Homes in the Neighborhood

The homes in Melrose–Rugby show its history. In the southern part, you can find older American Foursquare and cottage style houses. These were popular in the early 1900s. Towards the northwest, you'll see more modern split-level ranch homes. These were built later on.

Community Efforts and Improvements

A group called the Woman's Civic Betterment Club helped a lot. They worked to clean and improve the Melrose–Rugby area. This happened between 1907 and 1912. Their efforts were very important for the neighborhood. When the Melrose–Rugby Historic District was created, their work was recognized.

Melrose–Rugby Today

Today, Melrose–Rugby is home to several important places. These include the Roanoke Academy for Math and Science. You can also find the Eureka Park Recreation Center here. The J. F. Kennedy Park is another green space in the neighborhood. The Melrose–Rugby Neighborhood Forum is a group that helps speak up for the community.

Historic Recognition

The Melrose–Rugby Historic District is a special part of the neighborhood. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. This means it's recognized for its important history.
