Melvin Newbern (born June 11, 1967) is an American former professional basketball player. He played as a shooting guard and is known for his time with the Detroit Pistons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Newbern was born in Toledo, Ohio.

Melvin Newbern grew up in Toledo, Ohio. He attended Scott High School, where he played basketball. After high school, he went on to play college basketball for the Minnesota Golden Gophers. He played for the Golden Gophers from 1987 to 1990.

After his college career, Melvin Newbern began his professional basketball journey. He played for many teams in different leagues.
Playing in the NBA
Newbern got to play in the NBA with the Detroit Pistons. He joined the team for the 1992 season. During that season, he played in 33 games. He averaged 3.6 points per game for the Pistons.
