About the Memorial Branch Library
The Memorial Branch Library was designed by a famous architect named John C. Austin. He also designed other important buildings in Los Angeles, like the Griffith Observatory and the Hollywood Masonic Temple. The library's design is called Gothic Revival. This style makes the building look a bit like an old European castle or church.
A Special Design
Inside the library, you can find a beautiful piece of art. It is a large stained glass window made by artists at Judson Studios. Stained glass uses many colored pieces of glass to create pictures. This window shows a special design called a heraldic work.
A Historic Place
In 1987, the Memorial Branch Library became a very important building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. The library was added along with several other branch libraries in Los Angeles. These libraries were built in different old styles to serve the city's first library system.
Lights, Camera, Library!
Did you know this library has been in a movie? The Memorial Branch Library was used as a school in the movie Bedtime Stories. This movie starred the actor Adam Sandler.
A Fresh New Look
The library needed some repairs in the mid-1990s. It closed for a while to get a big restoration. This means it was carefully fixed up to look new again while keeping its old charm. During this time, the library moved to a temporary office space near John Burroughs Middle School. The Memorial Branch Library reopened its doors in 1996, looking great for everyone to enjoy.
