The Memorial Fountain is an outdoor fountain. It was designed by the company Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. You can find it outside the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland, Oregon, USA.
What is the Memorial Fountain?
The Memorial Fountain is a special place. It honors people who died in wars. The fountain has a wall made of marble or black granite. It also has a water pool with blue and turquoise tiles.
Design and Features
The wall is about 8 feet (2.4 m) tall. It has 24 columns of names. These are the names of people from Oregon who died in wars during the 1900s. Above the names, there is a message. It says, "IN MEMORY OF A SUPREME SACRIFICE WE HONOR THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR GOD, PRINCIPLE AND LOVE OF COUNTRY."
The water pool is about 27 feet (8.2 m) wide. The memorial wall is at the north end of this pool. The fountain has three water features. Each one has lights on both sides.
One water feature shoots water up to 13 feet (4.0 m) high. The other two spray water 2 feet (0.61 m) to 4 feet (1.2 m) into the air. The Smithsonian Institution says the fountain is an example of abstract and geometric art.
Condition and Ownership
In 1993, the fountain was checked. It was found to be "well maintained." This check was part of the "Save Outdoor Sculpture!" program. At that time, the Blazer's Oregon Arena Corporation owned the fountain.
